HUHTAMAKI

The association of client and photographer is at the hub of the development of a successful commercial photographer. Without a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the clients image needs, as an image maker, you are not truly in control of what is required. The development of skills to enquire and inform clients of the most appropriate solutions to their requirements and the images to be produced is paramount; you need to be able to work with a range of client briefs that in some instances might not present the whole story. The development of questioning in a professional manner and the development of understanding how images communicate, related to the communication needs of your client, underpins what you will produce for your client and ultimately how well it is received and works as a solution.

This projects in this module will enable me to produce images for a specific client briefs. I needed to work in the studio and on location, with all the advantages and disadvantages these two environments offer.
We had to investigate the range and applications of the products from Huhtamaki a worldwide drinks container manufacturer. This leader in drink’s containers manufacture, produce a wide range of products and your role is to use the products available to produce suitable images to support a promotional campaign communicating to commercial purchasers of the product, how well they integrate into the everyday life of the consumers who use them including their style and qualities.

The Brief.
The images need to portray the quality of manufacture and their use for hot and cold drinks. They need to show a range of situations where the product would be used and a range of lifestyle/activities the users might be associated with. Images do not require any additional text. In development of appropriate image solutions you need to make sure that client’s requirements are clearly met.
Working in the studio and on location generate creative image solutions for the brief
Make note of how you set-up shoots and take note of measures to indicate safe control of all the photographic equipment being used at each shoot.
Assemble a portfolio of six images as a selection of those captured whilst undertaking the project. Present to the group for informal critique and discuss your rational for image selection.
(from module handbook).

When preparing for this brief I went online and looked at Huhtamaki’s web site so I was able to get a better understanding of there products and what I would be working with.
After that I then also went online and looked at different product shots of cups to give me ideas which I then incorporated into my own.

With me having an understanding of what the client brief is and knowing how I was going to approach it I went in the studio and set my lighting up and experimented with shots. I had a table with a glass mirror with the cups places on top, a giant soft box at the back to create a nice white background and a small one to my left hand side. To get light to reflect on the right hand side I used a reflector, this was because I didn’t want harsh lighting but I wanted a bit of light which then didn’t make the images look as flat.

On location it was slightly more difficult as I couldn’t control the lighting and the only type of flash I have is the one on my camera, I had to use it indoors in the coffee shop as it was too dark otherwise. However with it being the flash and it wasn’t bounced up it makes the cup all bright but the background dark and the lighting looks too harsh. But with me not having the right equipment I had no other option other than turning the ISO up, although if I did do that it would have made the images look noisy.

After this shoot I decided to invest in flash gun with a diffuser, because it would have been ideal for this shoot and I will always need one for a location shoot. So hopefully if I was gave a similar brief the images would look a lot better.
